“Leapfest 2008” – International Parachute Competition

On the 9th of August, the Rhode Island National Guard played host to “Leapfest” – the annual international military static-line parachute competition.  This one-day event is the largest continuously conducted military parachute competition in the world – running since 1982.  Once again this year, all services of the U.S. Military were represented as well as teams from several foreign nations.

The event consists of teams of 4 – 1 jumpmaster and 3 jumpers – who compete to land as close as possible to a target marked on the drop zone.  Individual jumpers are timed from when they land until they reach the target.  The team with the lowest combined, elapsed time wins. Last year the winning team was from Bulgaria’s 68th Special Forces Brigade.  This year the winning team was from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
