Remington (?) ACR

It seems that the saga of the development and market-introduction of the MagPul Masada / Bushmaster ACR continues. The latest twist is that MagPul/Bushmaster have now licensed or partnered with Remington for the fulfillment of military orders.

The weapon is aptly named as the Adaptive Combat Rifle (ACR) and was demonstrated at SHOT 2007 by Magpul Industries as the Masada. The design showcases several innovative features – it can be rapidly changed from 5.56mm NATO to 6.5mm Grendel or 6.8mm SPC with the change of barrel, bolt, and magazine. Additionally, the rifle’s configuration can be altered for use as a close quarters weapon, carbine, and use in the designated marksman role.

Meanwhile, Bushmaster is still saying that the rifle will be available later this year (probably sometime around September/October) and that they are making final tweaks to the system in order to perfect it as a candidate for the US Army’s M4 replacement program. That’s good news for shooters in the US. The rest of us will have to wait for the licensed airsoft version to come along – eventually…

Its the railed handguard that gives it the SCAR look, and you can still get the polymer (MOE like) handguard I’d think. I’m praying this is released after this next military competition is over. I want one in 6.5×38 so bad it hurts

I assume you’re talking about the 6.5mm Grendel here, and I couldn’t agree more! That’s the best, most versatile round to come out of the AR line yet! You got to love those guys over at Alexander Arms! (I also really like the .50 Beowulf.)

I know I might be a little late on this, but the ACR was licensed to Bushmaster and they will market the weapon for commercial sales.

However, Cerberus owns both Bushmaster and Remington (and DPMS), so the ACR rights ultimately belong to them. Therefore the ACR will also be sold through Remington for government sales.

$2,300 for the Basic models and $3,061 for the enhanced. Ouch!!

Ouch is right! But when compared to a new SCAR Lite from FN it’s really not that bad. I looked at a SCAR (which I am not a big fan of by the way) at my local dealer the other day. The price tag was over $3000. Personally, I like the basic just fine. All it needs is the folding stock and a few bolt-on rails for the handguard. I don’t have any idea what the stock will cost, but the rails are pretty cheap.

That’s a very very good point JLA. And I totally agree – as expensive as they both are, personally I’d feel like I was getting better value-for-money with the ACR.

But since I live in the UK, I’ll have to content myself with the airsoft version only. 😦

Bummer! But you sound like just the kind of guy we need more of here in the U.S.. There’s currently a whole bunch of political, media, U.N. & elitist types doing everything they can to try to convince the American people that only police & the military should be allowed to own guns. Their claim is that it would reduce crime, all evidence (including what has happened in the U.K. & in Australia over the last 15 years) to the contrary of course. They are actually a pretty small minority, but a really loud and bothersome one! There are millions of us who would welcome you to join our ranks here in America! And here you can have as many guns as you can afford, including an ACR! (Just don’t move to someplace like Massachusetts or California. They’ve already allowed the liberal politicians to steal their birthright!)

Thanks for the compliment – yes, the notion that gun bans REDUCE crime is complete nonsense. They even tried to strangle the sport of airsoft over here – fortunately, we mounted a stiff, determined and well-informed resistance and managed to obtain a special “get-out-of-jail-free” defence for registered skirmish site members. And it was with much glee that we watched the minister who tried to screw us over get drummed out of power during the recent expenses scandal over here.

A citizen here can actually own a semi-automatic, military-style rifle – but its as tough as getting a machine gun license in the US.

Know all about Masshole and Kalifornia – my younger brother lives in CA and my in-laws in Mass.

Back when I was in the 82nd, I owned a Valmet M76FS that cost me about $400 – that same gun today goes for about $1,800-2,500. I do miss that little baby, and being able to go out and blast tin cans with it whenever I wanted to….

  Actually, depending upon which state one lives in, it’s not that difficult to get a machine gun here. All it requires is filling out a bunch of forms, getting fingerprinted, going through a background check, and getting the local sheriff to sign off on it. There’s a $200 transfer tax for each weapon, and it generally takes around 60 days for the background check to come through, but for most law-abiding Americans the most difficult thing about owning an automatic weapon is paying for it. We aren’t allowed to own any select-fire or fully automatic firearm manufactured since May of 1986, so there are only about 275,000 that can be legally owned and that number isn’t getting any bigger. The laws of supply & demand have the starting price hovering around $4000 for something like a Mac10 and going up from there. Way, way, way up for some models! A WW2 Thompson submachine gun will cost you anywhere from around $15k t0 $30k and an M60 goes for twice that! Some models go for well over $100,000! You could get a Class3 dealers license if you want to own newer models (and not pay the ridiculously high prices for the transferable guns), but that really is a pain in the butt, and it costs $1000 a year to keep current. The 1986 law didn’t make anybody safer – no gun control ever does – all it did was make owning & shooting automatic weapons into a game for rich men only!

Ah – thanks for the clarification on the MG situation. Sounds like what I meant to make a comparison of was the UK’s Section 5 license and the US Class 3 license – which sound reasonably similar.

Of course, on the plus side, over here you can legally buy a silencer/suppressor and stick it on any type of gun you want. Seems that its okay to go hunting or shooting with your manual-action rifle – or semi-auto .22 – or even your break-action or semi-auto shotgun; but just don’t make too much noise with it!

So, we can own things like a very nice reproduction, silenced .45 calbre De Lisle carbine without any extra hassle. 🙂 Gotta get me one of those….

I’ve been wanting one of those myself! Yeah, buying a suppressor here involves all of the same red tape as buying machine gun. The idiot politicians in Washington believe everything they see on TV.
