ESS Officially Enters the Global Airsoft Market

Airsoft is a combat-pursuit-shooting sport and tactical training method in which spherical, non-metallic, non-lethal rounds (BBs) are propelled from purpose-built, air/gas powered, 1:1 scale, authentic replicas of real firearms.

The first time I participated in an airsoft skirmish was 11 November 2004. I was immediately struck by how valuable, and practical, airsoft would be in training for close-range tactics and shooting skills. Over the past 5 or so years, this fact has also become more widely recognised and appreciated by the global real-deal tactical community – but so far only a few real-deal manufacturers have appreciated the cross-over potential and either licensed or produced products specifically for the global airsoft market.

Whether it’s conducted for tactical training or recreational purposes, Airsoft is an activity with unique physical hazards and risks – and in particular, it should never be conducted without proper eye protection. Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) is well-known as a leading manufacturer in ballistic eye protection for real-deal professionals, and they now offer a dedicated line of eye protection products specifically adapted and optimised for “The Airsoft Battlefield”.

Although there is currently no official safety standard for Airsoft eye protection, Airsoft players have traditionally focused primarily on the issue of impact resistance – referencing the ANSI Z87.1 standard as the base level for protection. However, this impact-only approach does not take into consideration the importance of coverage.

According to Brian Ross, ESS Sr. VP Sales & Marketing: “ESS recognises that although military goggles are built to withstand ballistic threats far greater than what is seen in Airsoft, Airsoft rounds pose a unique hazard that even military goggles are not designed to protect against – because Airsoft BBs can bounce and ricochet and end up getting around a goggle frame.  ESS believes the new ESS Airsoft product line to be the first and only authentic military-grade eye protection system that provides both the impact protection and coverage necessary for proper eye safety on The Airsoft Battlefield.”

The cornerstone of the new ESS Airsoft product line is the ESS Cortex Clip™, a rigid polycarbonate adapter that snaps onto the outside of ESS Profile™ Series goggles.  This patent-pending attachment for the ESS Profile NVG™ and ESS Profile TurboFan™ goggles, adds essential coverage in the nose and lower cheek area to help prevent BBs from passing underneath the goggle frame and into the eye area.
