A SOPMOD shotgun?
Well, its hasn’t been officially type-classified as a “Special Operations Peculiar Modification” (SOPMOD) but this news from Pro Patria would seem to be as-good-as…
Officially, its known as a Mission Enhancement Kit for the Mossberg 500/590 model shotguns. The kit has been developed by Pro Patria Inc., a small business in the US owned by a veteran who became disabled because of his service to his country. The kit took 3 years to develop and refine to its current state and consists of; an M4-type collapsible stock, a receiver mounted Picatinny-rail for red-dot scopes, a Picatinny-rail equipped forearm, a special barrel for door breaching (i.e., blasting through the latching/locking mechanism), a so-called “shotgun-retention-system” and a set of sling mounts.
Pro Patria have previously supplied this kit to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). As of last week however, they’ve been awarded a contract by the US Army Special Operations Command to supply over 1,100 of these kits to equip all Special Forces Groups – including Active Duty and National Guard units.
