South Korean commandos have rescued the crew of a hijacked freighter in the Arabian Sea, killing eight Somali pirates.

South Koreans watch breaking news about South Korean operation against Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.

The ship was heading to Sri Lanka from the United Arab Emirates when it was highjacked last Saturday.

Military officials say the captain was shot and wounded by pirates during Friday’s rescue operation.  They say all 21 crew members were rescued and the captain is expected to recover.

Five Somali pirates were taken into custody, eight were killed during the operation.

Somalia pirates have made millions of dollars hijacking ships in recent years.  The European Union, which has an anti-piracy force, says pirates are holding at least 25 ships with more than 600 hostages.
